Adrian Blair who runs the Timberlineparks website just wrote a review on the new Otto Lang park at Timberline. Here’s a quick clip from his review… “The rain and snow stopped just long enough to get some hot laps in Timberline’s new park, Otto Lang. In my 12 years of snowboarding there’s one thing I always look forward to when spring hits, its Otto Lang. And this year Timberline really out did itself. Almost a mile long run of jumps and jibs that should make people from across the…”

“If you wait… it will come”. This is a lesson I have been taught many times, but this year it was a hard one to practice. We have all surely been waiting patiently, wondering when the next big storm was going to come to the Pacific Northwest. There have definitely been some really fun powder days this year, but nothing like the last 2 years. Finally though… it’s coming. Massive storms have been forming to the north of the PNW and flowing down from Alaska. They are bringing the cold temperatures with them for a change, and just in a nick of time too. Because I was beginning to think the season was coming to an end. But sure enough, just when I thought spring was here, and my allergies were starting to rage, mother nature delivered us the goods.

Here’s a couple of shots over the last few weeks from Mt. Hood

He’s now the head coach at Champion Coaching and has recently signed on to manage the Morgan Hill Snowflex complex.

As many of North America’s mountains languish through warm, dry early season conditions, Whistler and the Northwest are getting hammered. In fact, Whistler posted it’s snowiest month on record in November with over 18 feet of snow piling up.

According to Whistler: November 2009 has seen a total accumulation of 560cm (18 feet) of snowfall, nearly four times that of November’s average snowfall of 148cm (58 inches). This is an increase of more than 19 per cent over the previous record of 469cm (185 inches) set in January 2006, and a 22 per cent increase over January 1992’s record of 459cm (181 inches).

And now, with the record broken, there is still an entire season of skiing and riding to look forward to. With a season that offers 192 days of skiing and riding, Whistler Blackcomb is already over half way towards the resort’s average annual snowfall of just over 10 metres (33 feet).

As reported on TransWorld SNOWboarding’s official Web site:

If you remember, a while back we filled you in on Olympic eligibility. The Grand Prix is the U.S. Olympic qualifying series, but in order to to compete in the Olympics, everyone needs a top 30 finish in one World Cup event between September 2008 and January 18, 2010. U.S. Snowboarding Head Coach Mike Jankowski cleared that up: “This is the FIS rule that basically makes sure anyone who ends up in the Olympics is competitive at an international level.”

Today, one of the top worldwide contenders for the Olympic halfpipe podium only just qualified to compete for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team at the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup at Saas Fe, Switzerland. This summer, Kevin Pearce probably had planned to hit up the Burton New Zealand Open and then follow that up with a stop at the Cardrona World Cup to secure his top 30 spot (Shaun White, Mason Aguirre, Luke Mitrani, Scotty Lago, Gretchen Bleiler, and Kelly Clark among others all qualified here), but Kevin instead broke his foot at the Mammoth Frends pipe session in the spring and so missed that World Cup. The Saas event today was his last chance to get a top 30 World Cup placing—now, there’s no doubt that he would have any trouble qualifying in top 30, but the ‘what ifs’ were there: what if his flight got canceled or he lost his passport, what if he came down with swine flu, what if he overslept. Anyway, the news from Saas Fe just came in and it’s good—Kevin Pearce qualified in twelfth place and can now compete in the Grand Prix tour for a spot on the Olympic Team; fellow Frend Jack Mitrani also got his top 30 placement. Kazu Kokubo of Japan qualified in first, Mathieu Crepel of France came in second, and Peetu Piiroinen of Finland was third. Australian Torah Bright won it for the ladies. And I must add, that Torah Bright is super hot!!!

The first stage of US Olympic halfpipe qualifying is done. Now on to the Grand Prix, the first stop is December 12 at Copper Mountain, Colorado.

Today I am giving thanks to mother nature and everything she does for us. She brings us fun and excitement in so many different ways. Snow on the mountains to ski and snowboard on, waves on the coast for surfing, and rivers and streams in between. So no matter how you choose to enjoy what she brings us, I think it’s important to give thanks. And this year she delivered the goods super early and in abundance. I don’t think I have been snowboarding in such good snow this early in the season ever in my life. 6 days down already and everyone of them has been a powder day. You just can’t beat that for an early opening to hopefully a great 09-10 winter season.

Thank you mother nature for all the fun you bring us.

Sunday was an insane day on the mountain at Meadows. A bunch of us were gathered around the fire at the Chale Ole! team house keeping warm and trying to figure out if the mountain was going to even open. We could see the gusts of wind outside and had heard the blizzard blow through during the night. They were claiming 13 inches, which on this day was an ominous sign. At 9 am we checked the report and they had only opened the magic carpet run. But the entire rest of the mountain was on lock down.

So we sat back watching the thirty-two team movie, (which is my favorite movie of the year so far) and talked about the old days of skateboarding. We reminisced about our favorite skateboard graphics from the golden era, how sick Matt Hensley was, and how we all used to wear chain wallets because of him. We talked about how day glow was cool in the later part of the 80′s when snowboarding was just gaining it’s footing, and how it’s cool again. We talked about the early Tahoe legends, like Noah Salazneck, Chris and Monty Roach, and Shaun Palmer. We cracked a few cold beverages and keep in tune with what the mountain was reporting. At 11am we got the official call. HWY 26 CLOSED. Guests to 100mph. Whiteout conditions. NO LIFTS ARE RUNNING. It’s a good day for a cocoa at home. Everyone felt let down, packed up and drive back to Portland.

The next morning I woke up and checked the report. No wind, blue bird conditions with 24″ of untracked powder. Needless to say, a few of us canceled meetings, rescheduled projects and went straight to the mountain. Bluebird freshies all morning = good times.
